Fleur de Lys opening reception: Pauline Baxter

Olga Wunderlich, introduction for Pauline Baxter

Opening, Sunday Dec 09, 2007
I am very happy we are able to do this show together and I am also very happy you all could come. You see here quite a range of Pauline´s work, all done in SL. She came here to SL first of all to explore it, and not to make art in the first place. And I think this is to be recognized in her work — she really is engaged in Second Life. When she first started to show her pictures it was in her private rooms. But very quickly people asked her to portrait them, as Pauline´s photographs were very special. And while doing these portraits, many of which are related with her lifestyle, she was always bold enough to do her art. So, her art progressed very fast, and she is now also engaged in politics through her work. I may also point out the image on the second floor depicting a homosexual man wearing a mask that could be Mohammed. The image is a remake of an art work by a female artist of Iranian origin that had become a scandal in a show in Den Haag and could not be shown there. But even with some other images such as the triptych above us, Pauline makes political statements. With this tryptich she rises her voice against long-term imprisonment.
As a conclusion, Pauline Baxter may be called a Second Life artist avant-la-lettre. Her work represents many aspects of what SL is or can be. In her photographs she depicts portraits, images of sexual dependency and visual political statements.
Later on, Tone Uriza will play for us live. Enjoy, have a look around, make your own interpretation, and please ask the artist about her work. Thank you very much Pauline for doing this show with me!
